Today is inauguration day. I'm disappointed and fear for our country, but there is little I can do at this point. Democracy must be respected and upheld. This got me thinking about today because it is also Martin Luther King, Jr. day. He and all the other civil rights leaders must be turning in their graves. So, instead of focusing on the potential destruction of our country's democracy, I'm choosing to focus on MLK and his legacy. He was a sharp guy and had many wonderful thoughts and ideas, leaving a legacy for us and clues to help guide us during trying times. So, here are some quotes of his to give you hope and faith, and to remember that we are stronger together.
"Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere."
"Out of the mountain of despair, a stone of hope."
"Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that."
"We shall overcome because the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice."
"Faith is taking the first step even when you can't see the whole staircase."
"The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy."
"Education must enable one to sift and weigh evidence, to discern the true from the false, the real from the unreal, and the facts from the fiction."
"The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically."
"Intelligence plus character, that is the goal of a true education."
